Frequently Asked Questions
Philanthropy
You’re selling poop bags with politicians’ faces on them. How is this philanthropy?
SH*T Bag by Smolotov is a grassroots movement, disguised as a product, disguised as a joke. We contribute to causes and support new media channels like StillWeRise and CatsOnACouch–real people doing real work in the trenches. We're not a 501(c)(3) with a board of millionaires. We're messy, DIY, and growing. As revenue increases, so will our donations. Smolotov doesn't pretend to save the world, but it might get someone to show up at a rally, call their rep, or attend a school board meeting. And honestly, we'll absolutely take partial credit for that. Know a candidate, org, or cause we should support? Email us at hq@smolotov.com.
Material Composition
What are SH*T Bags made of?
In a world filled with fast fashion and mass-produced goods, it's easy to overlook the importance of where our products come from and how they're made. We’ve chosen to partner with the leading manufacturer of compostable bioplastics with over 20 years experience in formulating the highest quality compostable bags whose mission is to eliminate plastics pollution.
Their facilities and products undergo rigorous testing by authoritative third-party agencies and are certified to meet the highest international standards. Their compostable resins, master batches and compostable bags have obtained certifications issued by international authoritative organizations, such as OK Compost (TÜV AUSTRIA), Home OK Compost (TÜV AUSTRIA), ASTM D6400(BPI), EN13432 (DIN CERTCO), AS4736 and AS5810 (ABA).
Their manufacturing and processing facilities have been BSCI-certified in the areas of worker involvement and protection, occupational health and safety, protection of the environment, and ethical business behavior.
We believe our decisions have a profound impact on both people and the planet, and have done the research to bring our customers the best pet waste bags in the world.
A significant portion of our bag is made from 100% plant-based, natural resources–PBAT + PLA + Corn Starch. That's polybutylene adipate terephthalate, polylactic acid, and corn starch. Plant-based, extra thick, leak-proof, because even revolution needs quality control.
• Corn Starch (Pure Nature): Food-grade corn starch is used as a primary functional ingredient. This is a 100% natural, annually renewable resource that is completely carbon-neutral. It provides the organic foundation for the bag's structure.
• PLA (Plants-to-Plastic Technology): Our PLA (Polylactic Acid) is derived entirely from the fermentation of plant sugars, such as corn and sugarcane. It is a "bioplastic" that contains zero petroleum. By using PLA, we are essentially "locking up" atmospheric carbon into a functional material rather than pulling new carbon out of the ground.
• The Role of PBAT: While PBAT currently provides the necessary flexibility and durability that 100% plant-based materials lack, its most critical feature is that it is biodegradable. It is engineered to be consumed by microorganisms just as easily as the corn starch and PLA components. PBAT is known for its flexibility and strength, making it suitable for various eco-friendly applications such as packaging and agricultural films.
Why this matters:
1. Home Compostable Certified: Because of this high plant-based content and our advanced formulation, our bags have earned the TÜV AUSTRIA (OK compost HOME) and BPI certifications. This means they don't just "break down"—they safely return to the earth as nutrient-rich compost, even in a backyard setting.
2. Reducing Fossil Fuel Dependence: Every bag we produce represents a significant reduction in fossil fuel use compared to traditional plastic bags. We are replacing "ancient carbon" (oil) with "new carbon" (plants).
3. Proprietary Blend: The specific ratio of these materials is our manufacturing partner’s ”secret sauce”–it’s what makes the bag strong enough for its purpose while ensuring it leaves no microplastics or toxic residues behind.
The result is a product that pet owners can feel good about, knowing it starts from a cornfield and ends as compost.
Because our bags are marketed for pet waste which may contain E. coli, we cannot legally make degradability claims in advertising. Eco-friendly, compostable, and biodegradable are verboten on marketing materials and packaging. In 2021, CBS News reported on a lawsuit pertaining to environmental claims–https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/1-77m-settlement-reached-over-false-marketing-of-dog-waste-bags/.
Our goal is to offer our customers the BEST pet waste bags in the world and we think we’ve done it!
Wholesale
Who can buy wholesale from Smolotov?
Wholesale orders are for two types of comrades:
- Retail partners–Pet stores, boutiques, gift shops, or anywhere people might appreciate revolutionary dog waste management.
- Organizations & nonprofits–Groups looking to fundraise while making a statement.
What's the wholesale pricing structure?
We sell 50-unit cases at discounted pricing. Email us at hq@smolotov.com with "Wholesale Inquiry" in the subject line, and we'll send you our current pricing sheet. (Yes, we still use email. We're old-school like that.)
What's a 50-unit case?
That's 50 individual boxes of SH*T Bags. Each box contains 60 bags on 4 refill rolls. ...That's 3,000 bags of pure political catharsis.
What are the minimum order requirements?
One case (50 units) minimum. We're a small operation fighting the good fight, not Amazon.
How does fundraising work?
Buy wholesale, sell at retail (or whatever price makes sense for your cause), keep the difference. It's capitalism, but the kind that actually helps people. We'll even throw in some marketing support if you ask nicely.
Do you offer consignment?
Not at this time. Rent isn't getting any cheaper under the current administration, and we need to keep the lights on.
What's your return policy for wholesale orders?
Defective products? Absolutely, we'll make it right. Buyer's remorse? That's between you and your therapist. Email us and we'll figure it out like adults.
Can I see samples before ordering?
Sure. Order a retail box first at www.smolotov.com. If you love it (you will), reach out about wholesale. If you hate it, at least you have 60 bags for your dog.
How long does wholesale shipping take?
Usually 5-7 business days within the continental US. Longer if you're in a place democracy forgot.
Can I put my own branding on the bags?
Not currently. These bags are a statement, and that statement is "SH*T BAG." But we're open to conversations about custom orders for larger commitments. Talk to us.
I have more questions. Now what?
Email hq@smolotov.com with "Wholesale" in the subject line. We're real humans with day jobs, but we will actually respond. Wild, right?
